Hartmut Ortlieb founded ORTLIEB Sportartikel GmbH in 1982, when the invention of the first ORTLIEB pannier was born out of the personal need to produce waterproof equipment for one's own use - because at that time there was none. The first ORTLIEB products were hand-sewn and sewn on mother's sewing machine, packing bags and bicycle bags made of truck tarpaulin, which Hartmut then tested with his friends on his own bicycle and climbing tours. What began with simple means quickly developed into a success story.
The company now has over 140 employees and a range of more than 500 individual products. Even today, everything is still under one roof: from development and design, mechanical engineering, production to sales, marketing and shipping. All waterproof products are manufactured at the company headquarters in Heilsbronn using high-frequency welding technology. Quality Made in Germany guarantees high-quality outdoor equipment for every demand, in every weather and in every terrain.
