Lauscha, first mentioned in a document in 1597, lies in the middle of the Thuringian Forest. The establishment of a glassworks was the beginning of a glass industry that was mainly characterised by its numerous home workshops. Lauscha became the manufacturing centre for artistic glass in Thuringia. In addition to utensils and toys, decorative beads were also made of glass. From the latter, the Lauscha glassblowers developed the glass Christmas tree ornament in the middle of the last century. Art glassblowing is another important branch of the glass industry. There are no limits to the variety of glass articles. In addition to vases, baubles, Easter eggs and glasses, glass animals are produced in the glassblowers' home workshops, both from solid and hollow glass. Whether animals of the forest, fish, elephants, parrots or swans - almost anything can be made of glass. No matter what the occasion, an artistic glass animal made in front of the lamp is always a special gift idea. The Christmas tree decorations on offer are also made in front of the lamp in the traditional way. The raw material used here is glass tubes, which are either blown into balls or other shapes. In some cases, förmer from about 100 years ago are still used here. The transparent birds, cones, fruits, Father Christmases and ..... are then silver-plated, lacquered and colourfully painted. With craftsmanship and creative imagination, new variations have been and continue to be created to suit the different Christmas traditions and tastes of the time.
