For over 35 years, Engel has been manufacturing lingerie and clothing from natural fibres according to the highest ecological criteria. This benefits both the skin and the environment. In addition to cotton, merino wool and silk in excellent quality made of merino wool and silk are used. In 2013, Egel developed a new fabric made of very fine, only 17.5 µ strong merino fibres in combination with noble robust silk and uses it to produce functional underwear and clothing with maximum wearing comfort specially designed for sports and outdoor use under the ENGEL SPORTS brand. In 2015, these products were awarded the federal ecodesign prize. Engel is a founding member of the international association of the natural textile industry IVN and co-initiator of the international global textile standard GOTS.
The sustainable path of Engel Sports
The particularly soft merino wool does not scratch and comes from merino sheep from Patagonia (South America). This subtropical grass steppe has a harsh climate, characterised by high temperature differences, dryness and wind. The very fine and strongly crimped wool protects the sheep from these weather influences. On huge pastures live about 90 million sheep in a natural way, a part of them in controlled organic animal husbandry. The wool for the functional underwear ENGEL SPORTS comes from these sheep. Mulesing, which is partly used in Australia and New Zealand and is very controversial, the circumcision of lambs around the tail to prevent infestation by fly maggots, is not necessary in Argentina due to the climatic conditions and is not practised. Shearing of sheep is carried out carefully for the animals in compliance with the highest animal welfare standards and is accompanied and monitored by independent supervisors.
Gentle handling of the wool
After being transported to Germany, the wool is finished with the innovative Naturetexx process without the use of chlorine and toxic chemicals. This revolutionary process, which uses renewable energy, is the ecological alternative to chlorine-based chemical treatments for wool. This ensures that Engel Sports products can be machine washed with wool detergent and, with the right care, remain soft and do not mat. The natural properties of the merino fibres are completely preserved by this process. After finishing the wool is dyed. This is done in a closed process using dyes that are harmless to health and the environment in Germany. The dye bonds completely with the fibre, so that the finished garments retain their colour, do not bleed when washed, and are therefore colourfast.
Clever combination for more wearing comfort
Then the merino wool is spun with the silk in certified factories to produce fine yarns. The silk comes from conventional breeding in China. The combination of fine merino fibres with smooth, robust silk ensures optimum breathability and has a temperature-regulating effect. An admixture of 2% elastane in the underwear and trousers supports the natural elasticity of the wool fibre and gives the garment a high level of dimensional stability during all movements. Engel Sports products are manufactured and packaged in Germany, either directly at Engel in Pfullingen or in certified companies, taking into account the shortest possible transport routes. On the one hand, this ensures consistently high quality in production, and on the other hand it guarantees compliance with the strict ecological and social standards that are necessary at all stages of production, for all auxiliary and input materials and for every work step, so that in the end the finished product can be certified. Engel's sportswear is manufactured according to the highest ecological and social criteria throughout the entire production process and is certified with the Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS).
